Following their Western Conference Championship in 2013, the San Francisco Dogfish stumbled out of the gate in 2014, losing 2 of their first 3 games to open to the season. In Week 3, the Dogfish played host to the Portland Stags, who had won their 2014 opener, matching their win total from the year before.
With both teams looking to build some momentum out of the early season schedule, their matchup at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco was seen as something as a test for a team trying to get back to the Championship and one looking to prove 2013 was a fluke.
Heading into halftime, the home team Dogfish had a single goal lead, but the Stags were right on their heels. Coming out of the half, San Francisco started off with two consecutive breaks, growing their lead to 11-8. After the Stags were unable to bring in a windblown toss around mid-field, Dogfish handler James Yeager picked up the disc and immediately found himself surrounded by a Portland triple-team. Undaunted, Yeager let rip a half-field hammer, firing the disc down towards his end zone and the wide open Ian Ranahan. While Yeager’s toss built the Dogfish lead up to four, the Stags would eventually come back to win on the road (BOXSCORE – WATCH GAME).
