The San Francisco Dogfish have signed Liz Penny as an Assistant Coach. She joins Head Coach Justin Safdie and Assistant Coach Matt Ruby in leading the squad for the 2015 season.
Penny began her ultimate career on the Carleton College women’s team and went on to considerable success at the club level. With six national titles and two world championships under her belt, she understands what it takes to succeed in high-level play.
“I could not be more happy about Liz joining the Dogfish staff,” said Safdie. “I have admired her since we first met more than 15 years ago, and I’m excited about working with her this season.”
Defense was Penny’s passion as a player. The Dogfish defense has been a consistently strong aspect of the team’s performance for the past two seasons, and additional energy from Penny will make them an even more formidable challenge for their opponents’ offensive efforts.
As a coach, Penny has molded players at all levels in women’s, mixed and open divisions. She helped bring three teams to their first-ever club nationals appearances, and recently traveled to Moscow to serve as guest coach for the women’s club team Brilliance.
“Ultimate is blown open right now—there’s an unprecedented opportunity for individuals and teams to create their own experience, culture and norms, and to build a strong relationship with fans and spectators,” said Penny. “It’s an exciting time for a team like the Dogfish, who are clear about what they want, and have the leadership and infrastructure to go get it. I’m fired up to be on board, and am looking forward to the 2015 season.”
