Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the sky in the end zone and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we look at some of the greatest moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at UltiPhotos. This week, we take a look at a spectacular moment captured by Rodney Chen.

The San Francisco Dogfish were not expected to win when the Portland Stags came to town during Week 6 of the 2015 MLU season. The Stags were 5-0 and breezing through the Western Conference with their eyes on matching the 2013 Boston Whitecaps as the only team in league history to go undefeated in the regular season. The Dogfish were 1-4 and had struggled to get anything going all season.

Every single “expert” at the MLU picked the Stags to win easily.

But the Dogfish, playing in front of their home fans, were not willing to lay down and do what was expected. The dangerous Stags led for the majority of the game, but, after forcing a tie late in the fourth quarter, the Dogfish had everybody in attendance on the edge of their seats. After forcing a Portland turnover, the Dogfish took their shot as veteran James Sheridan found rookie Nick Thompson in the end zone to take the lead.

As Thompson snagged Sheridan’s pass, Chen snapped the shot.

With less than a minute on the clock, the Dogfish were able to hold on and hand the Stags their only loss of the 2015 regular season. (BOXSCOREWATCH GAME)
